CBD oil for cats

Is your cat struggling?

It can be really difficult to determine when a cat isn’t feeling right. They’re incredibly adept at hiding pain or discomfort.

But sometimes it’s obvious when your cat is having a hard time. And when your cat is outwardly displaying his or her discomfort, then it’s time to address it.

Have you considered CBD oil for cats?

Even if your vet is currently treating your cat for a condition, he or she might recommend CBD oil as well. And with good reason.

Misconceptions About Cannabis

When people hear the word cannabis, they often associate it with marijuana. And that’s not entirely inaccurate.

Cannabis is an umbrella term for both marijuana and hemp plants. Generally speaking, a cannabis plant contains both cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Both CBD and THC are cannabinoids.

THC delivers the psychoactive effect, meaning it will get users “high.” CBD, on the other hand, does not.

When a cannabis plant contains less than 0.3% THC, it is considered a hemp plant. Products made from hemp are legal in all 50 states.

CBD oil for cats is derived from the hemp plant. And this is an important point. Because even if you live in a state where CBD derived from marijuana is legal, it can make your cat very sick.

So be sure that you only use CBD derived from the hemp plant.

How CBD Oil for Cats Works

Just like humans, cats have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a network of receptors found throughout their central nervous system and other biological systems that interact with CBD.

CBD contains anti-inflammatory and antipsychotic properties that help to maintain and improve the functionality of these receptors. In turn, this improves the integrity of the systems they regulate.

This interaction is what allows CBD to deliver numerous benefits to cats, including:

Lessen Anxiety

CBD effectively promotes relaxation in some people who are prone to anxiety. It has the same effect on our feline friends.

And cats are no strangers to anxiety. The average cat gets stressed in a number of situations:

  • conflicts with other cats
  • change in the regular environment
  • health problems
  • poor relationships with humans
  • traveling
  • visiting the veterinarian’s office

Some stress is normal in a cat’s life. But if he or she experiences prolonged stress, it can lead to poor eating or grooming habits, behavioral issues, a decline in health, and more.

With the calming effects of CBD oil though, cats can experience far less anxiety in situations that would normally cause stress.

And since CBD oil is all natural and non-toxic, your cat doesn’t have to be exposed to the adverse reactions that accompany the vast majority of mood-altering drugs.

Relieve Pain and Inflammation

It’s almost impossible to know when your cat is experiencing mild to moderate pain. They are exceptionally stoic.

Often it takes an x-ray or scan to determine a condition in your cat that could be causing pain – such as a sprain, broken bone, arthritis or cancer.

While CBD cannot cure any of these, it is an extremely effective anti-inflammatory and can provide natural relief for a cat who’s in pain.

Boost Appetite

If your cat is experiencing a decreased appetite, it could be any number of things.

Dental problems might be creating pain. A mood disorder could be putting the kibosh on your cat wanting to eat. Or some other health condition may be causing pain or nausea.

Whatever the case, a regular eating habit is important for your cat’s health. And while the issue may vary, CBD oil can help stimulate your cat’s appetite by providing relief for some of these possible issues.

Cool Skin Irritation

More often than not, CBD oil is given to your cat orally.

But in the case of skin irritation, the CBD oil is applied topically. This is effective because cats also have cannabis receptors on the surface of their skin.

As an added bonus, the emollients in the oil may contribute to a healthy and shiny coat too.

Balance Moods

If your cat seems constantly grumpy or irritable, it could be from lack of energy and/or unbalanced hormones. Or it could be a mood disorder.

Since CBD oil alleviates so many health issues including stress and anxiety, it can, by proxy, help improve your cat’s mood-related disorders too.

In addition, by interacting with the receptors in the brain that regulate mood levels and moderating hormone production, CBD works to maintain homeostasis in the body.

Ease Respiratory Issues

Have you ever taken your cat to the vet, only to find he or she has an upper respiratory problem a day or two after coming home?

Cats are prone to respiratory conditions, including asthma. And in many cases, these conditions involve inflammation.

While some cats only demonstrate minor symptoms, others require life long treatment, such as medication or even an inhaler. For these cats, CBD can offer less inflammation and therefore not as much need for these medications.

It is important to note that CBD oil is not a replacement for these important medications though. It serves to increase the effectiveness of these medications while providing some relief to your cat.

Decrease Seizures

In both cats and humans, seizures occur when there is an abnormal level of electrochemical activity in the brain. This can be caused by brain damage or other brain conditions.

If your cat is having seizures, it’s crucial that you have him or her checked out at the vet to determine the underlying problem.

At this point, CBD has been effective in treating seizures in both humans and cats. Because of this, there is an increasing number of studies on this. And with promising results.

Work with Your Vet

When using CBD oil for cats, it can be difficult to determine the right dosage. So be sure to work with your vet in treating your kitty.
